Blooming on the Scarlet Flow
Monique Wan
About the Piece
“Blooming on the Scarlet Flow” is a conceptually rich artwork created for the Flow Forward NJ menstrual health art auction in New Jersey.
In the process, I allowed different shades of red in watercolour to freely flow across the canvas, forming the motif of a menstrual blood splash. Upon the drying of the watercolour, delicate lines of peonies were meticulously drawn on top.
This square-shaped artwork, intentionally frameless, invites the buyer to decide its orientation freely—there is no designated top or bottom. Just like the message conveyed by the hashtag #freedomtobleed, I envision the buyer having the liberty to rotate the piece to their perfect angle, fostering a sense of personal connection with the art. The inclusion of peonies serves as a symbolic gesture, aiming to dismantle myths surrounding menstrual experiences. I hope to inspire others to embrace this natural aspect of life proudly, acknowledging the ebb and flow of emotions during this period. The peonies, with their timeless beauty, also symbolize an encouragement to find strength and beauty within oneself, even in the midst of the monthly cycle.
